Biography of P. V. Sindhu

Pusarla Venkata Sindhu (P.V. Sindhu) is a professional badminton player and represents India at international level competitions. She was born on 5th July 1995 to a Telugu family. Her parents, P.V. Ramana and P. Vijaya are Volleyball players. P.V. Sindhu’s father P.V. Ramana also received the Arjuna Award for his performance in his sport. Coming from a sport background, at the age of six, P.V. Sindhu was inspired to take up sports as her career but she chose Badminton as her main game as she was inspired by Pullela Gopichand who had just won the 2001 All England Open Badminton Championship.

He later became the coach of P.V.Sindhu and invested most of his time in Sindhu. She first went to the coach Mehbub Ali but after learning the basics and training solely in badminton she joined the coaching classes run by Pullela Gopichand and his wife. According to the reports, she was willing to give complete concentration to become a good badminton player and thus she used to travel 56 kilometers daily from her residence to the coaching camp. Her determination and willingness were a reflection of a great future standing in front of her.

Sindhu’s Journey as Shuttler

P.V. Sindhu’s way to success started as early as when she was just almost 10 years old. She won many competitions nationally and internationally also. She won the 5th Servo all India Ranking championship in doubles and Single title at Ambuja cement All India ranking.

Sindhu won the singles title at the Sub-juniors in Pondicherry (Read Things To Do In Puducherry), doubles titles at the Krishna Khaitan All India Tournament, IOC All India Ranking, the Sub-Junior Nationals and the All India Ranking in Pune. She also won the under-14 team gold medal at the 51st National School Games in India.

International Recognition of P. V. Sindhu

Her first international recognition came when she was ranked in the top 20 in the BWF World Ranking in September 2012. She was just 17 at that time. She received great accolades when she became the first Indian women in Singles to win a medal at the Badminton world championship in the year 2013. With her growing success in her field of sport, she was awarded the Padma Shri award, making her the youngest recipient of India’s fourth highest civilian honor in 2015.

With such great landmarks of success, she aimed higher and worked hard to earn a medal at the upcoming world event, Rio Olympics 2016. By that time, she was ranked at number 9 on the world rankings. With the support of the coach, teammates, and her self-determination she cleared all the rounds of qualifications. Her first qualification match was a little simple for her to win but the next three matches were against the players who ranked world no.2 to qualify for the semifinals and also won the semifinal against world no.6. With this found herself a spot in the finals of the Rio Olympics Badminton Gold medal match. In the final match she started off great and gave a tough competition to the world no.1 Carolina Marin, but towards the end she has to settle for the silver medal. With this she became the first ever woman shuttler from India to win a silver medal.

The Indian government announced that she will be awarded with the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award in the year 2016. She now has three of the highest civilian honor awards to her name. She rose to instantaneous fame among her fans and made all of India realize that there is more to Indian sports than cricket. She gave a great example of fighting against the odds and in spite of being a woman in the patriarchal country, support of the loved ones and determination to succeed can lead you to your destiny.

P.V. Sindhu now remains to be the pride of the nation, who created history by winning the first ever silver medal and has inspired the youth to look forward to badminton as a career objected sport.
